Like many teenage boys, A. C. Proctor, Sr., or “Curly”, loved working on cars. Not only did he work on them, he raced them, crashed them at times and of course, repaired them. His love of cars became a lifelong commitment when he began repairing vehicles as a career.
When he first began in 1947, vehicles and repairs were different but the customers weren’t. They demanded quality service and repairs and that’s what they received from “Curly” Proctor. Although the address has changed a few times over the past fifty years, whether it was Jones St., Ellis St. or Milledgeville Rd., each move has allowed the business to expand and incorporate new technology, more equipment and continue providing the ultimate customer service. Of course, the early downtown locations were quickly outgrown as vehicles became more of a necessity rather than a luxury. The increased demand for quality repairs lead customers to return to Proctor’s again and again in a tradition that has continued to this day.
In 1957 came the move to the first Milledgeville Rd. location and another followed in 1964 just a block down the street. A. C. Proctor’s has remained in that location for 27 years. Early in the 1970’s a complete 24 hour towing service was added as a convenience for our customers. Rather than wondering where your vehicle was towed after an accident, all you had to do was call Proctor’s and rest assured that your vehicle was in good hands with a reputable family owned business willing to put their reputation on the line for each and every repair.
In the early 1980’s, Curly’s son, A. C. Proctor, Jr. or “Carroll”, officially joined the business working his way through all the available positions beginning with detailing. From there he moved on to repairing frames and unibodies and then became an on call tow truck operator. After becoming a certified refinish technician, Carroll painted vehicles and finally became an estimator. ( In fact, he still continues to write estimates today.) By attending trade shows, conferences, and industry organization training courses, Carroll soon became an integral part of the business and still operates the family business as President and Chief Estimator.
Of course, what would the training be worth if the facility didn’t continue updating the available equipment and technology. Thus, the final move to our present location at 3011 Milledgeville Rd. in 1987 at which time we also incorporated the business. The new facility allowed us to create additional work space, a larger secure storage area, a separate detail station, state of the art down draft paint booths, unibody pulling equipment, and completely computerized estimating systems. The building has recently undergone a complete front office renovation creating an expanded reception area for our customers as well as some new offices for our estimators. Our latest acquisitions include a computerized DuPont paint color matching system and for the repair technicians – a SHARK-sonar enhanced computerized measuring system.
From the beginning, a dedication to customer service and a commitment to quality repairs has made A.C. Proctor’s Paint & Body Shop a fixture in the C.S.R.A. This commitment has allowed us to be the recommended repair facility for Acura of Augusta, Kia of Augusta, and Honda Cars of Aiken as well as an I-CAR Gold Class facility and Honda ProFirst Collision Repair Facility. Carroll Proctor and his entire staff plan to continue emphasizing the qualities that have made this family business a lasting and respected fixture in the C.S.R.A.
